KANSAS CITY, Kansas — Though he may not answer the referee’s first whistle, Colorado Rapids striker Deshorn Brown may still figure at some point in Jamaica’s World Cup qualifier against the USA this evening at Sporting Park here.

Match time is 5:30 pm at the home of MLS outfit the Kansas City Wizard.

Brown, 22, has had a great season with his club so far which has positioned him well in the race for the prestigious title of Rookie of the Year. In 29 matches, he has scored nine goals in his first season in Major League Soccer.

But the former St Elizabeth Technical High School student said he is not overly concerned about the Rookie of the Year honour, but has placed his interest on improving his overall game and is hoping he will have a chance to help his country out of the hole in which they have found themselves in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

“It was always a dream to represent the country and I have been working for years to reach here, so now it has happened I want to just push myself,” said the striker, who appears comfortable shooting with both feet.

“Things have been pretty good with my club, but I am not really focused on this Rookie of the Year business, but if they give it to me I’ll take it, but at the end of the day I wouldn’t say that’s what I am working for,” said the Manchester native.

Brown, who attended University of Mobile before transferring to the University of Central Florida, said his immediate goal is to help his club reach the play-offs in the first instance.

“Right now my focus is to help my club to reach the play-offs and try and win the cup, so I am not really focused on being rookie (top), but still if anything comes my way I will take it,” Brown told the Jamaica Observer.

With his rendition in training here, Brown looked in threatening form, and if given a chance in today’s World Cup qualifying game, could provide spark upfront in the Reggae Boyz’ must-win match.
