Goal feast
Yoanna Calderon Gonzanez led Cuba to a 6-0 win over Anguilla, while Trinidad and Tobago moved into championship form by blowing away Grenada 9-1 in their second game of the Caribbean Football Union Women’s Under-20 Championship at Drewsland on Sunday.
Cuba, who like Trinidad and Tobago are unbeaten after two rounds in Group A, handed Nevis & Anguilla their second defeat, led by five goals from Gonzanez (12th, 36th, 45th, 60th and 67th minutes) with the sixth coming from the boot of Yarileidy Mena Noro.
Cuba, who exposed the frailties of the Grenada defence with a 7-2 victory in their opening game, will now meet Trinidad and Tobago in the top-of-the-table cash at the Drewsland mini-stadium in the feature match today at 6:00 pm. Grenada and Nevis and Anguilla, who have yet to win a game, will meet in the curtain-raiser of the double-header at 4:00 pm.
With Jamaica and Cuba scoring handsomely against their opponents, Trinidad and Tobago decided to join in the spree and opened the scoring in the third minute through Patrice Campbell, with skipper Anique Walker making it 2-0 seven minutes later.
But during that period, Grenada showed that they too had designs on scoring and Melissa Sharis Alexander pulled one back for the Spice Island girls to make the score 2-1.
Somewhat incensed by letting a goal score against them, Trinidad and Tobago attacked in greater numbers and within five minutes off the breach Naomie Guerra made it 3-1.
After falling further behind, Grenada began to pressure the Trinidad and Tobago defence, but it was the Trinis who countered and scored again. For their next goal, Khadidra Debesette finished well in minute 35 to make the score 4-1 at the interval.
Full of goals Trinidad and Tobago returned for the second half pumped up from where they left off and Debesette completed a hat-trick with another two goals in minutes 66th and 68th to make it 6-1. Jonelle Warrick added a seventh in minute 70, Shenelle Henry was on target three minutes later to make it 8-1, while Warrick completed a double in the 90th-plus for Trinidad and Tobago to post a 9-1 victory.
