Dear Editor,

Despite strong opposition from the Christian fraternity and church organisations the Government went ahead and gave the green light for horse racing to take place on Sundays at Caymanas Park. I seem to recall too that the lottery people were also given the go ahead to sell their wares every day of the year, save for two. As is the case with a lot of the decisions administrations have taken in the past, revenues for the government coffers appears to have been the overarching motive. The seat belt law comes readily to mind.

Fast-forward to Sunday, October 27, 2013, and a race meet is in full swing at Caymanas Park. Midway the meet a bolt of lightning falls from the sky and it is reported that patrons were sent scampering in all directions. Some say it is luck, while others point to divine design, why no one was injured. However, the totalisator board in the outfield was hit and put out of commission. The rest of the meet was called off and will be continued on Wednesday next.

Could it be that the Christians were really on to something and we are now being giving a warning by the Creator? Either way, I suspect that for ensuing Sunday horse racing meets the crowd will see a dip in numbers.
