FIVE of the eight overseas teams won their matches in the second round against the local teams on Sunday in the Michael Holding Masters Cricket Competition.

Joint defending champions Long Island led the way, along with Florida, Atlanta, Brooklyn and Queens. The losing overseas teams were Caribbean, New York and Westmoreland, while the three local teams to post wins were Caribbean, Ultimate and Treasure Beach.

Long Island 177-7 off 28.5 overs, defeated Manchester by three wickets at Kaiser on the back of Delroy Morgan’s 64, and Wayne Cuff’s 34, while the wickets went to Colin Buchanan (3 for 36), Adolphous Lawrence (2 for 41), and Clifton Reid (2 for 45).

Manchester, who won the toss and batted, made 176 for 6 in their 35 overs, with Radcliffe Nelson, 66,

and Adolphous Lawrence, 46, contributing the most runs. The main wicket-taker was Talisman Gordon, who bagged 2 for 20.

Florida got the better of South St Elizabeth (the other defending champions) at Manley Horne Ground by two wickets, after replying with 149 for 8 in the 34 over.

Bert Davis, 40, and Kenroy Wright, 28, got among the runs, while Clevan Salesman, 2 for 16, and Gary Bromfield, 2 for 24, were the main wicket-takers.

South St Elizabeth faltered in their second match after winning the toss and making a paltry 144 all out in 29 overs. Only Manley Horne, 25, Roy Tape, 22, and Clevan Salesman, 22, put up a fight in the batting department. The bulk of the wickets were shared among Donald Powell, 3 for 25, Kenroy Wright, 2 for 3, and Calvert Whittick, 2 for 19.

Many-time champions New York lost to Ultimate by three runs in a high-scoring match at Ultimate. Ultimate batted first and made 216 for 7, with first-round century-maker Orville Pennant topscoring with 83. New York tried valiantly but ended with 213 for 6 in their 35 overs. Roy Alexander topscored with 79.

The other two local teams to post wins were Clarendon and Treasure Beach at Content Gardens and Treasure Beach BSA, respectively. Clarendon defeated Caribbean by 104 runs after making the highest second-round score of 235 for 9 to Caribbean’s 131 all out. Treasure Beach surged ahead of Westmoreland by 40 runs after posting 233 for 5 to Westmoreland’s 193 all out.

The two matches played in the corporate area went to Queens and Atlanta. Queens defeated Melbourne at Melbourne by five wickets, and Atlanta got the better of Kingston at Sabina by one wicket with one delivery to spare. Melbourne played well to get to 199 all out, but Queens roared back with 200 for 5. Kingston raced to 202 for 9, but Atlanta pipped them with 203 for 9.

The final match went to Brooklyn over Montego Bay at Barnett Oval by six wickets. Montego Bay batted first, making 175 for 9 and Brooklyn replied with 176 for 4.
