The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) will today have a major showcase of fire fighting activities in Junction, St Elizabeth, as part of activities to mark Fire Awareness Week 2013.

Senior Deputy Superintendent Floyd McLean told a recent JIS Think Tank that the fire brigade would be putting on a spectacular display of its various services at what he called an ‘open day’ at Roy’s Plaza in Junction square.

“Not many persons have seen our rescue teams operate, our extraction team or our EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians). There are several skill sets that the public do not know about; so we’ve decided to show the public what fire fighters can do and how well trained we are,” he said.

The JFB’s public relations officer, Assistant Superintendent Emelio Ebanks, said the day’s activities should leave a lasting impression on those attending.

“It will highlight what the Jamaica Fire Brigade is all about [and] I guarantee you that it will be mind blowing. You will see acrobatics, rescue, and will involve the EMTs. Its showing the capabilities in terms of manpower, units, and facilities that the JFB has,” he noted.

The JFB is observing Fire Awareness Week from October 28 to November 2 under the theme: ‘Fire Prevention our Priority’.

“All 33 stations across the island will have activities, exhibitions and things that persons can go and get additional information. So, we implore everyone to go into the fire stations, familiarise yourselves with the station, the fire fighters and general fire fighting activities,” Ebanks urged.

Among the major activities for the week are an exposition at Emancipation Park in New Kingston, and a ball at the Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios.
