DomRep starts exporting yams to NY under govt plan
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic is for the first time exporting white yams to New York as part of a programme to help struggling farmers in the Caribbean country.
The government said in a statement Saturday that the government had awarded nearly US$300,000 to an association of farmers in the northeast coastal town of Samana for the project. Farmers are expected to harvest some 2.5 million square meters (27 million square feet) of land.
The government said the programme is expected to directly benefit nearly 850 producers. Officials noted that the Dominican Republic already began exporting white yams to Canada.
