Wadadah begin defence of Western Confed Super League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Wadadah FC will start the defence of their Captain’s Bakery & Grill /Charley’s JB Rum Jamaica Football Federation/Western Confederation Super League this evening when they take on Tomorrow’s People in a St James derby in the second game of a double-header at Jarrett Park.
Wadadah won last year’s competition by beating Reno FC in the final, but failed to advance to the Premier League losing in the play-offs. No doubt, the aim for the Daniel Ricketts-coached team will be to go one step further this season.
In the opening game set to start at 4:00 pm, Promoted Lucea FC, the only club from Hanover in the competition, will make their debut against Savannah SC, who were champions two years ago but were relegated from the Red Stripe Premier League last season.
The competition was launched on Tuesday with the announcement that Charley’s JB Rum has come on board as co-sponsors with Captain’s Bakery and Grill for a total of $3.2 million, the most ever for the competition.
In addition to the champions trophy and the right to contest the Premier League eliminations, the winners will take home $200,000, second-place $120,000, third-place $90,000 and fourth-place $60,000.
The mid-season champions will get $30,000 and the runners-up $20,000, while the team that has the most points at the end of the return round of matches will get an additional $30,000.
In the individual section, the winners of the Most Valuable Player awards, Leading Goal-scorer, Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, Best Forward, Fair Play and Winning Coach will all get $20,000 each, while the Match Commissioner of the season will get $10,000.
The format of the competition will see the teams playing each other at home and away with the top four on points after both rounds advancing to the semi-finals, which will also be played on a home-and-away basis and the winners on aggregate will contest the final.
Twelve teams, including four former Premier League campaigners and five former Confederation Super League champions, will compete for honours in what could be an interesting season.
Wadadah FC, Reno FC, Village SC and Savannah SC have played in the Premier League, while Granville FC of St James join them as former winners.
In addition to Lucea of Hanover, Montego Bay Boys’ Club of St James, Duanvale FC of Trelawny and Sandals Whitehouse of Westmoreland are the promoted teams.
Three more games will be played on Tuesday. Village will host Reno, Norwood Strikers and Sandals will meet at the UDC field in Montego Bay with Granville United and Montego Bay Boys’ club to meet at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College.
