GARETH Henry won all three major titles — the Open Men’s Single, the Open Men’s Double and the Open Mix Double — in the 2013 All Jamaica Badminton Championship at the Constant Spring Golf Club on Monday night.

Henry defeated the Under-17 champion Samuel Ricketts 21-14, 21-11 in the Open Men’s Single final to retain his title as the senior champion. He dominated the game from start to finish, winning the first set 21-14 with some beautiful backhand and forehand shots before returning to close off the match 21-11 the same way he did in the first set with a long and powerful smash-shot that sent the challenger diving to the floor.

“Samuel is a good upcoming junior player but this is an Open Men’s Single… I know he is a net-smasher so I just took the net away from him and let him come at me from over… I did not have it easy and I did had to put out my all,” Henry said.

Ricketts, on the other hand, said that he was not comfortable playing in front of so many people and that might just have contributed to his defeat.

“This was my first time playing in front of such a huge crowd, I got nervous and the shuttlecock wasn’t coming off my racquet the way I wanted to, but it was a good match,” he said.

Henry then returned with teammate Garron Palmer to win the Open Men’s Double, defeating the pair of Samuel Ricketts and number two-seeded junior champion, Sean Wilson by 21-15, 24-22. As usual, Henry and Palmer won the first set comfortably, but had to fight real hard in the second set.

The pair had to withstand a good challenge from Ricketts and Wislon with some powerful jump smashes that forced the game into three-match points for the set, after they were neck-and-neck at 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22 with the juniors faulting the net each time on their servers to leave the score at 23-22. It was then left to Henry to produce a straight low-server that saw the seniors take the second set 24-22.

Completing the triple crown, Henry then teamed up with sister and Open Women’s Single Champion, Geordine Henry defeating Jamari Rose and Open Women’s Single runner-up, Katherine Wynter 21-17, 21-10 to win the Open Mix Double.

The brother-and-sister team had to work hard in the first set which saw them come from 10-15 down to win 17-21. They eventually won the set’s second set convincingly, 21-10, that sent their fans into rapture.

Henry (Geordine) said that she was happy for her brother to win the triple crown.

“I came here to win, I wanted to win this for my brother. I did mine last night (Sunday), winning the championship and knowing this is my last tournament for the year, I just came out and played hard,” she said.

Triple crown winner, Gareth Henry, was lost for words after completing the feat.

“I feel very delighted, just happy. My legs were getting weak, so I just kept playing hard”, he said.

In the Open Women’s Single final Geordine Henry defeated Katherine Wynter 13-21, 21-17, 21-12.

Wynter combined with Ruth Williams to beat Terry Walker and Christine-Mayne 21-15, 21-14 in the Open Women’s Double.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, President of the Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA), Robert Richards, said he was pleased with the huge success of the tournament and thanked the Sports Development Foundation, Lan Integrators, National Outdoor Advertising, WATA, Wealth Magazine, Tru-Juice, The Gleaner and Spanish Court Hotel.
