Jumpers Lamara Distin and Nia Robinson get podium finishes in Finland
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jumpers Lamara Distin and Nia Robinson achieved podium finishes at Wednesday’s 2026 Paavo Nurmi Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Turku, Finland.
Distin was second in the women’s high jump with 1.94m, while Robinson placed third in the women’s long jump with an outdoors season best 6.61m (1.4m/s).
Four other Jamaicans all placed fifth in their events- Assinie Wilson in the men’s 400m hurdles, Roje Stona in the men’s discus throw, Ackelia Smith in the women’s long jump and Danniel Thomas-Dodd in the women’s shot put.
Distin had a good outing, clearing five bars on her first attempts and was in the lead before failing to get over 1.97m.
Ukraine’s Yulia Levchenko, who struggled early, needing three attempts to clear the opening height of 1.78m, also took two jumps at 1.94m and three to get over 1.97m to win.
Robinson fouled her first two jumps before jumping 6.58m (1.2m/s) and then improved to 6.61m (1.4m/s) in the fifth round.
Smith was fifth with 6.53m (1.3m/s) with American Monae’ Nichols winning with 6.88m (0.7m/s) and Great Britain’s Jasmin Sawyers was second with a season’s best 6.62m (1.1m/s).
Wilson, who went into the meet with the fastest time, had to settle for fifth in the men’s 400m hurdles, running 48.98 seconds as Slovenia’s Matic Gucek won with 48.47 seconds, followed by Great Britain’s
Alastair Chalmers – 48.53 seconds and Kemorena Tisang of Botswana was third with 48.66 seconds.
Stona threw 66.15m in the men’s discus throw, which was won by Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia with 69.13m; Daniel Stahl of Sweden was second with 67.40m and world leader Matt Denny of Australia was third with 67.26m.
Thomas-Dodd threw 18.78m in the women’s shot put that was won by American Chase Jackson with 20.66m, ahead of Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands with 20.18m and Sarah Mitton of Canada 19.47m.
