WHAT THEY SAY! – TREVOR SIMPSON
When did you start your career as a jockey?
I started my career as a jockey in 1986 but was involved in the sport for a good while before that, always being at the racetrack. I was introduced to racing by close friends.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner came aboard Sweet Explosion for trainer Allan “Billy” Williams over the straight five course. I remember the day well.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner was the Fitzroy Glispie-trained She’s Traditional at 99-1 in the 1000 Guineas over 1600 metres. That was a sweet, sweet win, I was happy with that one.
Which is the best horse that you have ridden?
As you can expect for riding so long, I have ridden a few good horses, but the best one that I have ridden is Persian Invader. This horse was very special, you could ask him to do anything and he would do it. He was trained by Kenneth Mattis.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
For me that is a difficult question, but Prince Consort is the best horse that I have seen race at Caymanas Park. The Phillip Feanny-trained colt was an outstanding racehorse, and although I have never ridden him I can tell when a horse just laid out everything on the track when you ask him to. Plus he was a fighter that gave his all when he raced.
Who influenced your career the most?
To be honest, my friends, fans, family, owners and trainers. They all
supported and encouraged me. Without them I would not be where I am today — a champion jockey several times over. I want to thank them for their support over the years.
