Judge in Kartel murder trial sends warning to CCN

Judge in Kartel murder trial sends warning to CCN

KINGSTON, Jamaica –Presiding judge in the Vybz Kartel murder trial, Justice Lennox Campbell, Tuesday afternoon issued a stern warning to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) saying that they should be more careful about the contents of releases being sent to the press.

The judge’s message was sent through an Inspector of Police to Deputy Superintendent of Police Steve Brown, head of the CCN, the information arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Justice Campbell’s warning was issued after defence lawyer Tom Tavares-Finson complained about a press release which he deemed an attempt to intimidate the defence and prejudice the case.

In the offending release the CCN reported that the guest list at a hotel where a witness in a court case was staying was stolen, presumably by associates of the accused.

Tavares-Finson also took issue with another release regarding the accuracy of media reports on “a case that is now before the court”.

Tavares-Finson asked that both the Commissioner of Police and the CCN head be brought to court and warned in person.

Justice Campbell however dismissed the suggestion saying that there was no need to have them in court.
