Night football for Manchester
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Starting today and tomorrow, the Manchester Football Association (MFA) will be hosting its first set of night matches, president Dalton Wint has confirmed.
This latest milestone, said Wint, is in keeping with the FA’s long-term plans for the holistic football development in the central Jamaica parish.
“What we are really looking to do is add another dimension to football in the parish,” Wint said. “When the games are played during the day, we don’t get a lot of support because most people are at work, so we have decided to try night football.”
The games will be played at three venues: Kirkvine Sport Club, Brooks Park and Downs Community Centre, with matches set to kick off at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, respectively.
Wint, who is in his third term as MFA boss, said the cost of hosting the games will be incurred by the FA. As such, an entry fee of $200 will be charged at each venue.
“For now, all the cross zone fixtures in the Major League will be played at night (while) the games in the zones will be played in the day,” he added. But already, the FA president said there is quite a buzz in the town of Mandeville about the games — which he hopes will be a weekly staple on the MFA calendar — and foresees a good turnout.
“They (the fans) have been asking about it, because they see it happening in other places, so we are hoping to get that support,” noted Wint, before expressing his desire for night games to be more than just an experiment.
“We are hoping it will be here to stay!” he said.
