Three Jamaican players in MLS top ten picks
PHILADELPHIA (CMC) — Three Jamaican footballers were in the top 10 picks in the first round of the 2014 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft at the Philadelphia Convention Centre, Pennsylvania Thursday.
They are Andre Blake, the 23-year-old goalkeeper who played three seasons at the University of Connecticut, 19-year-old Andre Lewis, who was a key player during Jamaica’s successful Under-17 World Cup qualifying campaign in 2011 and Damion Lowe, who was selected as the eighth pick of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Seattle Sounders.
Blake was selected as the first pick of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union and became the first goalkeeper to be top overall choice in the draft.
Lewis has been training with the North American Soccer League team New York Cosmos.
“It’s an honour…It’s an honour to be here. It’s like a dream come true. Words can’t explain how I feel right now because I’ve made a lot of people proud. In my life, I’ve been through ups and downs,” Lowe, 20, told reporters during a press conference.
“I come from a place where not many people become successful or fulfil their dreams. I’m just glad for this great opportunity and I’m looking forward to great things in Seattle”.
The fourth Jamaican in the draft, Romena Bowie was not selected at the first and second round of selections.
The third and fourth rounds will be done on the 21st January via conference call.
