AUGUST Town FC missed a number of gilt-edge chances while playing to a 0-0 draw with visitors Cavalier SC in yesterday’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at the UWI Mona Bowl field.

The Boris Johnson-coached August Town, who were promoted to the RSPL at the start of this season, moved to 15 points, but remain last in the 12-team standings. With the point, Cavalier progressed to 22 points and into sixth position.

After the final whistle, Johnson appeared frustrated that none of his team’s chances was put away.

“We created the chances, we missed them, and we should have won today, but we didn’t have the luck. We didn’t have that zest in front of goal, though recently we spent time practising our finishing,” he told reporters.

His opposite number, David Laylor, conceded that Cavalier was, by far, the inferior side on the day.

“It wasn’t one of our better performances, so we really have to give thanks for the draw, especially playing away to August Town.

“We made some adjustments in midfield today that didn’t pan out and they had a field day. We had to fix it [in the] second half,” Laylor said.

August Town comfortably dominated the first period and should have gone ahead less than five minutes before the interval.

That chance — arguably the easiest of the match — fell to Nicholas Smith, but Cavalier goalkeeper Jovell Plunkett spread himself well to block from point-blank range.

On the stroke of half-time, August Town’s Davion Alves did well to clip a shot over the advancing Plunkett, but the ball was cleared off the line to ensure the scores remained level.

Cavalier made better use of the ball in the second period, but lacked the incisiveness to trouble the hard-running home team.

Not surprisingly, the industrious Smith, who had a positive presence in midfield for August Town, went close again midway the half. He looked on in disappointment as his left-footed free-kick was parried onto the right upright by Plunkett.

Shortly after, Larone Russell, who had a below-par showing all afternoon, was also left frustrated after redirecting a powerful shot from Smith against the left upright.

Meanwhile, Tivoli Gardens gained three valuable points with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Boys’ Town at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in which both teams had penalty misses.

Marvin Stewart had given Boys’ Town, the designated home team, a 31st minute lead, but Jameel Thompson pulled Tivoli Gardens level in the 63rd minute. And within the space of six minutes both teams had the opportunity to grab the lead from the penalty spot but failed to do so.

First, Jamaica College schoolboy Junior Flemmings of Tivoli Gardens was entrusted with the penalty and saw his effort well saved by goalkeeper Kirk Porter in the 79th minute. Then Nicholas McMorris crashed his penalty onto the crossbar and headed the rebound straight at goalkeeper Edsel Scott in the 86th minute.

But Dane Kelly found the clincher for Tivoli Gardens in the 90th+2 minute, pushing them to 21 points in seventh spot, while Boys’ Town remained on 18 points in 10th position.

Arnett Gardens climbed into fourth spot with 24 points following their 2-1 away win over Humble Lion at Effortville Community Centre.

Former national player Wolry Wolfe gave Humble Lion a 57th-minute lead from the penalty spot, but Arnett struck back with two goals in quick succession, courtesy of Newton Sterling and new signee Renae Lloyd in the 76th and 77th minutes.

Humble Lion have slipped further down the ladder to eighth, on 21 points, following their second consecutive loss.

At Drax Hall, Waterhouse remained in third spot on 25 points following their 0-0 draw with Rivoli United, who inched to 23 points and dropped a spot to fifth place.

Second-placed Montego Bay United, on 29 points, also battled to a 0-0 draw with ninth-placed Sporting Central Academy on 21 points.
