More ‘hurdles’ for Milo relays
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Two new events, the Class 3 and 4 girls’ hurdles, will be contested at the 36th Milo Western Relays to be held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, on February 8, according to meet director Ray Harvey.
Harvey said the organising committee has “responded to the request from coaches to add more sprint hurdles races to the list of events” especially following the “unfortunate cancellation of the Central Hurdles and Relay meet” that was to have been last weekend at the GC Foster Sports College. This popular meet was cancelled this year due to a lack of sponsorship and the poor state of the track at GC Foster.
“Development must be part of what we do here at Milo Western Relays,” Harvey said “and if there is a need for an event and we can fit it into our schedule, we will do our best to ensure that we assist the athletes as much as we can,” he told the Observer yesterday.
The event included the sprint hurdles to the schedule last year, running High School Boys Classes 1, 2 and 3 and Girls Class 1 and 2 after similar requests from coaches, especially those in western Jamaica following the cancellation of the Mannings Development Meet where the athletes would have normally had a chance to contest the hurdles events.
This year, Harvey said they would be flexible with the requests from the coaches, “we have the time and we can include it into the schedule without any disruption, so we thought why not.”
The meet will be launched at a press conference at Wexford Inn tomorrow starting at 10:00am where the details of the meet will be outlined.
