A jaun Burton, 18, is an excellent, young, sports. He was born April 23, 1996 and is well known for his exceedingly great talent in the sport of basketball, a sport in which he represents Campion College in Under-19 competitions.

“I chose basketball because I think I am a natural athlete,” he stated, acknowledging that he can also play cricket and football. He added, “my current position is point guard, and I believe I am the best dribbler on my team”.

Burton believes that his school has a well-organised basketball programme. His competitive nature and desire to win were recently on display, when he was brought to tears after fouling out of a game against Wolmer’s Boys in the all-island competition at the National Stadium courts. Notwithstanding, his massive 33 points made him the top scorer of the contest.

Ajaun is not only about sports, but also ensures that his education is intact — his achievement of seven subjects and a place in lower sixth attest to that that.

Aside from his interest in basketball, one of his main goals is become an architect or a photographer.

‘If I had the chance to go overseas and play professional basketball or stay in Jamaica and further my education, I would choose to stay, because at anytime I can get injured and my career could be over.”

The 5’11” tall player also spoke to the importance of family. “My uncle, my aunt and grandma are very supportive towards me playing this sport. They are my support as my dad is abroad and my mom passed away.”

Ajaun Burton thinks his success is attributed to the fact that he has been playing with older players for a while, and he gets great motivation from his coach.

As it relates to inspiration, he finds Rajon Rondo to be his favourite player – not much of a surprise given that he too is a point guard with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are also his favourite team.

“One of my dreams is to play professional basketball at the NBA level, but first I would like to go to the university of North Carolina and play NCAA Division One basketball.”
