FAGAN Avenue in the community of Grant’s Pen, St Andrew is to get a facelift.

A motion seeking $6.9 million from the equalisation fund to rehabilitate the avenue was approved at the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) council meeting on Tuesday.

Jamaica Labour Party Councillor Susan Senior (Norbrook division), who moved the motion, said the surface of the road was deplorable and needed intervention.

The resolution stated that Fagan Avenue was home to approximately 600 residents and several businesses such as New Global Business Centre, Jamaicans For Justice office and a shopping centre. It is the former home of the Jamaica Observer.

Fagan Avenue was named after the late Dr Edward Henry Fagan, who served as Mayor of the KSAC from 1952-1953.

The resolution was seconded by People’s National Party (PNP) Councillor Eugene Kelly, who revealed that he was a grandson of the late Dr Edward Fagan.

At the same time, the council also voted for a St James Parish Council resolution seeking to have a cess placed on companies whose vehicles deposit concrete mix on the roads. A resolution passed by that council in December argued that all companies supplying concrete mix should be charged a special levy. Money collected from the levy should be placed in a dedicated fund that would be used to clean and remove concrete mix deposits from roadways, the motion stated.

“Parish Councils are called upon to carry out necessary repairs to roadways that have been damaged by spilled concrete mix and are being constantly faced with the challenge of inadequate resources to effect these repairs, especially in light of the fact that they have no provision in place to remove deposits of such material,” the resolution stated.

Support for the resolution was sought from the KSAC, the Portmore Municipal Council and other parish councils.
