CATHERINE HALL, St James — Defending boys champions Munro College and girls champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) were on their way to retaining their respective titles at yesterday’s final day of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA’s) Gatorade/Hanover Co-operative Credit Union Western Championships at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

After 27 finals Munro, who led from the eliminations on Tuesday, had amassed 281 points to lead arch-rivals STETHS by 24 points while the STETHS girls had a comfortable 97.5 points, lead over Rusea’s High after 32 finals were completed.

There were a number of outstanding performances, including sprint double wins by six athletes highlighted by Newell High’s Shivnarine Smalling, who took the Class 1 100m in 10.47 seconds and the 200m in 21.15 seconds as he announced himself to a big crowd.

Green Island’s Javier Johnson won the Class 4 boys’ double, setting a new record of 23.64 seconds for the 200m event.

STETHS’ Leroy Francis won the Class 2 double, while there were two double winners in the girls’ sprints — Christine Moss of STETHS in Class 2 and Herbert Morrison’s Shantae Simpson in Class 4.

Cornwall College’s Alrick Ottey broke two records in the horizontal jumps, leaping to an impressive 14.68m in the Class 2 triple jump to beat the 13.46m set last year and 6.84m in the long jump to eclipse the 6.73m set by Damion Young of Rusea’s in 2000.

STETHS’ Ouekie Wright was second in the triple jump with 14.35m and Munro’s Tevin Dunn placed third with 13.25m.

Odain Lewis of Cornwall College won the Class 1 triple jump with 14.59m, beating Munro’s Anthony Bailey, 14.37m and Cornwall’s Orell Bulgin, 13.86m.

STETHS’ World Youth Championships 400m hurdles gold medallist won the 400m Open in 53.09 seconds ahead of teammate Jamar McNaughton, 53,62 seconds and Munro’s Kemar Mowatt, 55.83 seconds.

He returned to win the boys’ Class 1 110m hurdles in 13.94 seconds ahead of Maurice McIntosh, also of STETHS, 14.38 seconds; and Muschett High’s Jonelle Cameron, 14.97 seconds.

Shanice Cannigna of Rusea’s retained her title in the Girls Open 400m hurdles in 63.63 seconds, beating her teammate Lamara Distin, 1 minute 10.61 seconds and Delecia Mattison of STETHS, 1 minute 13.76 seconds.
