AFTER a year of inactivity, Montego Bay Motoring Club (MBMC) revved up to stage a event, titled Back to Basics: Dexterity #1, at the Harbour Street car park in St James on February 2.

The club last staged an event in 2012.

“The event was successful and well attended,” Mark-Anthony March, MBMC vice-president, told Auto.

Most significant for March, and club president Stephen Mahoney, were the 41 persons that attended their first meeting of the year prior to the event.

Both men see this as a vote of confidence and a rekindling of interest in motorsport on the western end of the island.

“Even older members came out to the event and helped where they could,” March said.

According to March, the MBMC suffered during the downturn in the economy, which reduced the number of organisers and the level of sponsorship available to the club. This, in turn, affected competitor interest and those who could, refocused their budgets on national events.

“We called the dexterity meet Back to Basics because that’s the theory going forward for the MBMC: quick and easy events that will help develop the proper path for young talent on this side of the island,” explained March.

The MBMC said it intends to partner with other clubs, including the Drivers Rallysport Club, to plan and execute events throughout the year.
