Wolmer’s upset favourites JC
WOLMER’S Boys’ was crowned champion of the inaugural Boys U-19 section of the 2014 University of The West Indies Pelican Hockey Invitational on Saturday, February 15 after knocking off heavy favourites, JC in a highly contested championship game.
Wolmers’ triumphed in a closely fought battle over Jamaica College following a thrilling penalty shootout after the teams played out a 0-0 draw.
Jamaica College took the ascendancy and led the dreaded penalty shootout 3-2, but failed to capitalise as the Wolmer’s goalkeeper saved the final shot attempt sending the shootout to sudden death. Wolmer’s seized the momentum given to them by their goalkeeper and scored with the deciding shot following a miss from the schoolboy hockey powerhouses, JC.
Wolmer’s Boys’ captain Justin Frith was voted the tournament MVP and despite the loss, Jamaica College’s Rohan Rose was voted the competition’s best goalkeeper for a tremendous day in goal. Brown’s Town Community College’s Jason McFarlane was the competition’s leading scorer.
In the third place of the U-19 games, Kingston College Braves easily defeated Sharpes 2-0 while the Kingston College Strikers got past Brown’s Town Community College 3-2 to place 5th overall.
“This saw the introduction of the Under-19 Boys’ Competition this year as a grooming opportunity for these upcoming team players as well as scouting young talent to the Club and Collegiate games,” said Richard Wisdom, UWI hockey coach and tournament manager.
The tournament continued with the Club Division today with the two-time defending champions Circus Circle Hockey Team failing to advance past the first round.
The UWI Pelican Hockey Invitational on Saturday, February 15, at the Mona Hockey Turf saw two new champions being crowned in the Club Division, Explorers and Tropics in the male and female sections respectively.
