Beyond the finish line — Andre Wellington
Andre Wellington
Hailing from the most successful school in Boys’ Champs history, Kingston College, Andre Wellington is arguably the school’s most successful sprinter since the turn of the millennium.
He competed at Champs between 2000 and 2006, missing out on champs during his final year of high school because of injury.
Wellington rubbed shoulders with Usain Bolt and Remaldo Rose — with whom he built a fierce rivalry. His high-point at Champs 2003 came when he lowered both Tesfa Latty and Winston Smith’s records in the sprint double to 21.59 and 10.71 seconds respectively.
However, injuries plagued his track career when it was expected to take off to new heights, though he still pushes his body to try and successfully return to track and field at the highest level.
He is still training; he joined the Racers Track Club at the beginning of the 2011-2012 season, with the hope of regaining top form.
