WORLD Youth 200m champion Ramone ‘Batman’ McKenzie is a track star who attended Calabar High. The ‘Batman’ title was earned due to his favour of wearing a batman mask when competing.
In 2007, he was Calabar’s star in the GraceKennedy/ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, after setting two records in the Class Two 200m in 20.89 seconds and the Class Two 400m in 47.24 seconds. In 2008, McKenzie powered past the finish line in the 400m finals in 46.62 seconds in Class One.
He has won various medals in international competition. In 2007 and 2008, he received gold in the Carifta Games in 400m and 200m. His personal bests include 20.54 seconds in the 200m, which he ran in 2012.
McKenzie returned to Jamaica last October after training in Florida for a few years. He has joined forces with the Akon Track Club based at Red Hills Road and has even put on an entrepreneurial hat with the launch of a purified water.
