LLANDILO, Westmoreland — Beaches Negril won the first trophy of the Westmoreland Football Association’s Captain’s Bakery and Grill Major League competition on Saturday, after beating favourites Petersfield FC 5-3 on penalties in the end of first round final, after the teams had played out a pulsating 3-3 draw after regulation and extra time at the Llandilo field.

Two Ryan Smith free kicks in the first half had given Beaches the lead at half-time but Petersfield FC struck back in the second half, and led by two goals from Akheem Whyte, the teams were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.

Whyte could have been the hero in extra time but saw his penalty kick spectacularly saved by Beaches goalkeeper, Donville Wright, who had committed the offence that led to the spot kick.

Wright came up big in the shoot-out again, saving Petersfield FC’s first kick as his teammates stayed perfect.

Petersfield would have come into the game as favourites after winning all their first round games to top Zone One with 12 points ahead of Three Miles River on nine and former champions Russia, while Beaches Negril had won Zone Two with eight points, just ahead of Chantilly Forever’s seven and Race Course’s six points.

However, It was Beaches Negril that took the initiative on Saturday as Smith beat goalkeeper Anthony Hamilton with two free kicks from similar positions in the eighth and 20th minutes.

Romario Whyte, who replaced Desroy Clarke in the 58th minute as part of a double switch, started Petersfield’s comeback

when he scored in the 62nd minute, four minutes after he entered the game to cut the deficit to one.

Beaches Negril restored their two-goal advantage in the 69th minute when Hamilton was beaten by a third free-kick, this time from Kenneth Smith.

Petersfield FC did not give up and Whyte got his brace in the last 11 minutes of the game –the first in the 79th minute when his long-range shot found its way through a crowd of players and past goalkeeper Wright. Then in the dying minutes of regulation time, he scored from the penalty spot to tie up the scores at 3-3.

He could have been the hero at the end of the first half of extra time, but Wright who had fouled Dave Drummond, forcing him to limp off the field brought off a spectacular double save.

The goalkeeper first blocked Whyte’s powerful shot then got back in place in time to block the rebound effort from Eran Vassell.

When neither side managed to score it was down to penalties where all five Beaches kickers scored while Wright’s heroics, saving the first kick from Romario Whyte saw his team lift the trophy.
