Kibaki aims to score with One More Day
EVEN while Kibaki Halloway was lacing up for Constant Spring in the National Premier League, he had ambitions of scoring as an entertainer.
Since hanging up his football boots in 2002, he has gone full-time into music, recording as singjay Kibaki.
His latest song, One More Day, is a combination with former child star Singing Sweet. It is produced by Chimney Records, which also called the shots on Jah Children Beware, another new Kibaki production.
In an arena awash with singjays, the 35-year-old Kibaki says keeping things fresh is key.
“Wi have a different sound an’ dat is important,” he said. “But the biggest thing to me is to keep the thing clean, so wi always try fi put out well-crafted songs.”
Kibaki is from the Grant’s Pen area of St Andrew. As a teenager, football was his primary interest; a midfielder, he was a member of Dunoon Technical’s winning Manning Cup team of 1998.
After school, he turned out for Constant Spring in the NPL. While still a player, he recorded his first song, Mister Man in 1999.
Kibaki has recorded for several producers including Sly and Robbie (Walk Wid Yuh) and Daseka Records (Jah Jah Never Fail I).
