CAVE HILL, Barbados (CMC) — Assad Fudadin collected his third half-century of the season to be the rock in another feeble Guyana batting performance in the Regional Four-Day Championship against Combined Campuses & Colleges on Friday.

The West Indies left-hander batted resolutely for 71, as the Guyanese, sent in to bat, reached 209 for six in their first innings at the close on the first day of their fourth round match under the lights at the 3Ws Oval.

Fudadin struck six fours and two sixes from 209 balls in close to 4-and-half hours and shared a 60-run second-wicket stand with his captain Leon Johnson for the second wicket to consolidate for the visitors.

Johnson made 34 before Christopher Barnwell, not out on 22, and Anthony Bramble, unbeaten on 20, added 40 in an unbroken seventh wicket partnership inside the last hour, to beef up Guyana’s total after their teammates waded through the early stages with dour batting.

Raymon Reifer, bowling left-arm fast-medium, grabbed two for 35 from 17 overs and lanky fellow pacer Kevin McClean nabbed two for 36 from 14 overs to be the most successful CCC bowlers.

Fudadin and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the 17-year-old son of durable West Indies left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, gave Guyana a solid, if not unspectacular start, taking their side to 44 without loss at lunch.

The younger Chanderpaul fell victim to off-spinner Ryan Austin in the first over after the interval, when he was caught behind for eight from an ill-advised, back-foot drive to leave the visitors 45 for one.

Johnson’s arrival precipitated an increase in the scoring tempo with Fudadin nearing his 50 with a lofted drive over the long-off boundary off Austin for six and reaching the milestone from 141 balls with a drive for a single off McClean.

Johnson carried on merrily with Fudadin taking Guyana past 100 before he was bowled offering no stroke to a delivery from Reifer.

Narsingh Deonarine joined Fudadin and they carried the Guyanese through to 124 for two, but the lights had now taken full effect and the pitch was freshened from the cool night air, and the CCC pace bowlers started to gain appreciable bounce and movement.

The hard-working Vincentian seamer Kesrick Williams was given a third spell from the Ramadhin & Valentine (south) end, and produced an unplayable snorter to Fudadin, which the batsman could only glove to joyful wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton who skipped in front first slip to take the catch.

The CCC bowlers continued to expose the brittle Guyanese batting, when McClean bowled Deonarine for 19, had Chandrapaul Hemraj caught down the leg-side for 11 gloving a short, rising delivery, while Raymon Reifer claimed the elder Chanderpaul dragging on a lazy, half cut, half drive for eight.

CCC claimed the second new ball in the final hour, but they failed to make further inroads, as Bramble came to the crease and batted the remaining 45 minutes to the close with Barnwell.

Both CCC, last on the seven-team table on 10 points, and Guyana, sixth on 13 points, will be looking to earn their first victory of the season and both have reason to feel confident against each other.

CCC have not lost any of the three previous home matches they have played against the Guyanese, who will be looking to extend their winning streak against their hosts to three straight.
