FINANCIAL advisory and brokerage firm Mayberry Investments Limited recently donated $3-million to the St George’s College track team just ahead of the highly anticipated Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Boys’ and Girls’ Championships.

The money, given by Mayberry heads and brothers Christopher and Konrad ‘Mark’ Berry, is the single largest donation that the school has ever received in its history to pursue its track and field endeavours.

Christopher Berry, chairman of the investment firm, said, “Both myself and my brother Mark went to ‘STGC good and true, we are the boys of white and blue’ — a truly great educational institution where boys grow into men, and where track stars are ‘student athletes’ and learn skills that are fundamental for contributing to society.”

A large portion of the funds will be used for infrastructural items at the outset, such as aiding in the building of a solid track programme, inclusive of upgrading of the team’s gym equipment, training tools and field event equipment.

Peter Brooks, STGC’s track team manager, said, “Other portions of the funds, however, will go towards housekeeping expenses such as competition apparel, spikes, as well as expenses such as physiotherapy, etc. With Mayberry’s long-term commitment to the programme, we will also be committing a significant amount to scholarships in the future.”

He explained that due to the generosity of donors this year, they have also been able to adequately address nutrition.

With the training and other preparations that have been made, the STGC team said they are ready for the competition and will give of their best despite the few injuries that some team members are dealing with.

Brooks said, “The team will be heavily dependent on Class Two and Three athletes for points at the championships. We have no real individual stars, so we are looking for a total team effort to make it into as many finals as we possibly can, and once there we can seek to accumulate points.

“The boys have worked extremely hard, many of them since the ending of last champs. We are hoping that our best, this year, will take us back into the top 10, as we ultimately strive toward being a major force in track and field over the next few years.”

St George’s College placed 17th at the championships last year with 15 points. The school has won Champs on two occasions, the last being in 1925.
