As we had published in last week’s teenAGE, Jamaicansmusic.com has partnered with Flow to stage an Earth Hour 2014 Reggae Concert at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre on Saturday, March 29. The opportunity is being used to encourage young people to take action toward preserving the environment. In a recent vox pop, a few people were asked the above question. Here are their responses:

ALANA CABALLERO Merl Grove High School

The environment can be preserved by reforestation, planting a new tree for each that is cut down. It can also be preserved through using renewable resources such as the use of solar and geothermal energy.

HAYDEN COLLINS St George’s College

To preserve the environment, I would recommend that more factories use less sulphur in their production processes as this would lessen air pollution. I would also recommend that deforestation discontinues and encourage the planting of more trees which will result in more oxygen and more breathable air.

As a young person I can plant more trees. I can also avoid blocking the drains so water can travel freely, instead of having homes and other properties being destroyed by flood because of drain blockage. Properly disposing of garbage and recycling are also good options to pursue.

People who burn garbage need to stop because a lot of what is burnt can actually be reused: things like plastic bottles and bags, boxes and old clothes. Bottles can hold chemicals, bags can be used on kites, clothes like pants can be made into gym bags, boxes can be used as substitutes for mats on a rainy day. Just think about another purpose then reuse your garbage or what I call “reusable treasure”.

I can protect the environment by practising proper recycling of plastic bottles. I always try to use plastic bottle receptacles on campus.
