The 104th staging of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletic Championships (Champs) gets underway today at the National Stadium. Friendly rivalry, unique fashion trends and talented high school athletes making their mark in sporting history, all account for Champs being, undoubtedly, Jamaica’s most anticipated sporting event for both the young and young at heart.

Champs 2013 was a great year, closing with Calabar High School taking home the title for the boys and Holmwood High School topping the table for the girls. Can they maintain it or will rival athletes step up their games? It’s stiff competition indeed, as the 2014 season shows promising athletes smashing records and improving personal bests. teenAGE wants your predictions of this year’s event.

Athlete: Javon Francis School: Calabar High School Event: 400m

He is a shoo-in to win. His performances during the season are consistent and I would bet that he wins the gold.

Akeel BROWN

Athlete: Jonielle Smith School: Wolmer’s Girls’ School Event: 100m, 200m

Last year she wowed the crowd when she captured the sprint double in her final year of class two and also represented Jamaica at world youth.

Nicholas MARTIN

Athlete: Javon ‘Donkey Man’ Francis School: Calabar High School Event: 400m

I think he’s the male athlete to watch not only because he’s a world silver medallist, but also he is seemingly in the shape to break Usain Bolt’s long-standing 400m record.

Romario MURPHY

Athlete: Jhevaughn Matherson School: Kingston College Events: 100m, 200m, 4X100m

He has been showing consistency with his victories and much improvement over the years. He broke the record last year in the class three 100m and 200m and has the ability to do so again.
