Sean Dyche has been dubbed “The Ginger Mourinho” and he remains on course to meet the original next season as Burnley’s relentless promotion drive continues.

Burnley’s manager is refusing to get caught up in the giddy talk of supporters but after another victory at Turf Moor — this one being a comfortable 2-0 dismissal of Doncaster — the reality is that Dyche is odds-on to be in the top flight come August.

Goals from Sam Vokes and Junior Stanislas put Burnley three points off Leicester and such is the momentum and belief they have, it would be no surprise if they leap-frog their rivals by beating them to reclaim the Championship’s top spot.

‘The machine keeps rolling on,’ said Dyche. ‘I have told the players that this was a great win and to enjoy it but I have reminded them that we have got it all to do again on Saturday against Leicester here. What we might achieve is for others to talk about.’

As far as Doncaster manager Paul Dickov was concerned, there was controversy around the goal that put Burnley on their way to three points and was baffled as to why a penalty was awarded 20 seconds into the second half after a coming together between James Coppinger and Vokes.

Dickov suggested referee Tony Harrington buckled under pressure, claiming Burnley’s players and coaching staff surrounded the official at half-time over a decision that had gone against them in the first half when Ashley Barnes had tumbled in the area.

But Dyche said: ‘That’s absolutely not the case. My captain (Jason Shackell) asked the referee – as he is fully entitled to – why he didn’t give the penalty on Ashley. There was no abusive language or anything untoward. I was right behind (Shackell).’

Burnley’s rise under the impressive Dyche has been one of the stories of the campaign and, should they maintain the professionalism that was evident here, it will a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ they end a four year absence from the Barclays Premier League.

Dyche had used his programme notes to remind home fans about the happy memories a game with Doncaster provided – a 2-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium in October put Burnley top of the Championship for the first time this season – but this contest quickly became a grind.

Fighting to keep their heads above water, Doncaster came to make things difficult and succeeded in the opening 45 minutes, as their stubborn and resilient defending restricted Burnley to shooting from long range, rather than creating clean chances.

Burnley dominated from the start. Scott Arfield, Stanislas (twice) and Dean Marney all tried their luck from distance but the closest they came to getting the goal to settle the nerves of those inside Turf Moor was the thumping ninth minute effort from Arlfield that drifted just over the bar.

Any lingering frustrations that they had not fashioned a break through, however, were quickly dispelled almost as soon as the game re-started when Doncaster defender Coppinger shoved Vokes as he they jostled for Chris Baird’s cross in the 47th minute.

‘We defended well and I couldn’t fault our work rate or desire,’ said Dickov. ‘We were up against a team that is going to be in the Premier League next year. I don’t want to look as if I am moaning about referees but it’s a big decision at that time to go against us. There was nothing in it.’

Vokes showed no nerves as he rammed in his 21st goal of the campaign and Burnley never looked back from that point and sealed their victory when Stanislas skipped clear to roll a shot past the stranded Johnstone.
