Shadae Lawrence upsets Rochelle Frazer to cop gold in discus

HYDEL High School’s Shadae Lawrence upset pre-Championships favourite Rochelle Frazer of Edwin Allen to take the gold medal in the Class One discus throw event on yesterday’s second day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

Lawrence, who was third in Class Two last year behind the Edwin Allen pair of Frazer and Paul-All Gayle, won the event with 48.06m ahead Frazer’s 47.50m, with another Edwin Allen thrower, Tasha Crosse, taking the bronze with 45.12m.

Junelle Fullerton of Edwin Allen, the favourite to win the Class Two shot put duly obliged, however, with a 15.02m effort for the gold, after being third last year.

Holmwood Technical’s Georgette Samuels was second with 14.55m ahead of Hydel High’s Davia Brown, who threw 14.38m to take the bronze ahead of Edwin Allen’s Gayle, who had a best throw of 14.35m.

There was a major upset yesterday in the Class One girls’ shot put where IAAF World Youth representative Isheka Binns failed to advance past the first round, finishing 16th overall with just 10.61m.

Binns, whose personal best is 13.93m set at the World Youth Championships, was second in Class Two last year and was tipped to place in the top three this year.

Meanwhile, after losing the discus gold, Edwin Allen’s Frazer, who is tipped to win the gold, advanced easily with the best throw of 12.82m, followed by St Andrew Technical’s Ayesha Champagnie (12.40m) and Holmwood Technical’s Shanakay Rowe (12.14m). Vere Technical’s Kiona Bradshaw and Holmwood’s Taneika Elliston also went over 12m in yesterday’s preliminaries.

Edwin Allen’s Denae McFarlane, who came into the meet as the leader in the Class Four long jump, failed to advance past yesterday’s first round, managing only 4.39m and it will be up to her teammate Lotavia Brown to ensure points for the defending champions.

Brown jumped 5.09m yesterday, second to Hydel High’s Ashanti Moore’s 5.10m, while her teammate Shade Parr was third after the preliminaries with 5.06m.

Three finalists from last year’s Class Two high jump will battle for the medals in Saturday’s finals after yesterday’s preliminaries.

Shanae McKenzie of Manchester High, who was third last year, along with teammate Annastacia Forrester, and Samara Spencer of Hydel, join nine others in the finals.

Gold medal favourite Lamara Distin of Rusea’s High is one of 12 athletes who advanced to today’s final of the Class Three high jump set to start at 10:50 am.

Eight of the 12, including Distin, cleared 1.60m, with the others going over 1.55m.

Distin, who won at the COCAA Western Championships in mid-February, has a season and personal best 1.71m and has gone over 1.70m at the Gibson Relays.

Also into the finals are the Edwin Allen pair of Shania Ingram and Annia Ashley; D’Andra Morris and Lorean Murray of St Andrew High; the Wolmer’s pair of Toni-Ann Farquharson and Jolaine Spence, as well as Daszay Freeman of Manchester High, Shiann Salmon of Hydel High, Buff Bay’s Rushelle Jones, Zinedine Russell of Convent of Mercy, and Holy Childhood’s Anthonette White.
