I have a number of Vandas hanging from a large tree. I notice that the new leaves have turned black on a couple of them. The roots, however, seem to be in good condition. How do you suggest I manage this problem?

Dear Valerie:

Firstly, look up at the tree. Does it have a fungus that is perhaps causing the orchids to suffer the same fate, or is it the result of too much watering? These are assumptions, so perhaps you could send a photo.

If it is the result of a fungus, the fungicide Ridomil and an insecticide should remedy the problem, or you could wipe the plants with dishwashing liquid mixed with cooking oil.

It is not only the height of the orchid, but also the type of orchid.

Dendrobiums, like many types of orchids , multiply from the root.

Sun Vandas you cut only if you will have at least three roots on the now new plant.

Try not to cut the plant before it reaches approximately three feet.
