Minzie’s best wasn’t good enough Bog Walk star satisfied with PB, but laments finishing second
Jevaughn Minzie of Bog Walk High expressed satisfaction with his performance in the Boys’ Class One 100 metre final at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletic Championships on Friday.
Minzie achieved a new personal best of 10.16 seconds, lowering his previous best of 10.28 seconds, when he finished behind record-breaker Kingston College’s Zharnel Hughes who posted 10.12 seconds to remove the old mark of 10.21 seconds set by Yohan Blake in 2007.
He is one of only 14 youth sprinters to run the 100 metres in less than 10.3 seconds.
“I achieved a new personal record which is quite pleasing for me right now, but at the same time I am also disappointed that I didn’t come out as the winner,” said the World Youth relay gold medallist.
The 18-year-old outlined that in his estimation the last few metres was where he lost the race.
“The fault was basically the last 10 metres of the race, but I am tough so I just have to go back and work a little and see where I can go from there,” he explained.
The well-built athlete said he is looking to get back into training and will then turn his focus on CARIFTA, before settling down for his academic work.
“Well, from here it is back to training, then the focus will be on CARIFTA and after that then CXC,” he said.
Minzie has now settled down as a mature athlete after that embarrassing loss at the 2011 CARIFTA Games where he was caught showboating in the 200 metre finals. He has won a 4X100m relay silver medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona along with a silver in the 200 metres at the CRAIFTA Junior Games in Nassau Bahamas last year.
