SHANICE Cannigan of Rusea’s High came from behind to win the girls’ heptathlon open with 4,521 points after a commanding run in the final event at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championship at the National Stadium yesterday.

Britny Kerr of Hydel came into the 800 metres, which was their final task of the gruelling seven-discipline event leading with 3,894 points, ahead of Latavia Coombs (3,808) of Holmwood Technical and Janell Fullerton (3,789) of Edwin Allen.

Cannigan, who was fourth coming into the event, went straight in front and never looked back to win the event in a time of 2:21.63 minutes, ahead of Lisa Blackwood (2:29.58) of Vere Technical and Janell Fullerton (2:33.30 seconds).

Britny Kerr ended up second with 4,463 points, with Fullerton ending in third with 4,441 points. The top five is rounded off by Coombs (4,411) and Ayesha Champagnie (4,368) of St Andrew Technical.

The day began with the long jump, which was won by Champagnie with a leap of 5.65 metres. Shamoya Mcneil of St Jago finshed second with 5.46m, and Coombs (5.40m) third.

The high jump was won by Kerr, who went over 1.70 metres, ahead of Cannigan 1.65 metres and Coombs 1.64 metres.

Champagnie won the shot put when she threw 12.40 metres. Fullerton with 11.38 was second ahead of Kerr who threw 9.95 metres.

The 200 metres which closed out their first set of events saw section one being won by Cannigan, who finished in 25.38 seconds ahead of Sasha Wright of Buff Bay High 26.34, and Domonique Porter of McGrath High 26.71. Section two was a stroll in the park for Blackwood (26.03 seconds), to win ahead of Champagnie (26.15) and Kerr (26.28).

The event began with 12 athletes, but only nine took part in the final event.
