Eddy Thomas, NDTC co-founder, dead
EDDY Thomas, co-founder of the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC), died at his home in Montego Bay, St James, on Thursday. He was 82.
Thomas, along with the late Professor Rex Nettleford, formed the dance troupe with 16 other members in 1962.
Barry Moncrieffe, NDTC’s artistic director, lauded Thomas for his contribution.
“The NDTC would not exist today, nor would it be the culturally significant institution that it has become over five decades, had it not been for the vision and work of our co-founder Eddy Thomas. He was an inspiration to us all and will be missed, but never forgotten,” said Moncrieffe.
The NDTC will host its traditional Easter Sunday morning showcase on April 20, in tribute to the life of Eddy Thomas.
Prior to the NDTC, Eddy Thomas co-created the Roots and Rhythms Show with Nettleford in celebration of the nation’s thrust toward Independence. His Eddy Thomas Dance Workshop, which was formed years prior, acted as a foremost training ground for the development of legendary Jamaican artists.
With the NDTC, he was known for the creation of memorable dance works such as Legend of Lovers Leap and Kingston 13. Thomas is survived by his sister Marjorie, nieces and nephews.
