IT has been three years since long jumper Jovanee Jarrett has had a full season, and at 31 years old and with a string of injuries, she senses the end is near.

But she is determined to fight, hopefully hanging on for at least one more season before making a decision whether or not to hang up her jumping spikes and walk away for good.

Jarrett represented Jamaica at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, but managed a best jump of 6.19m, well below her season’s best 6.65m while she battled a shoulder injury.

The former Auburn University star — who also represented Jamaica at all levels as well as competing at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany, and the 2010 IAAF World Indoors in Doha, Qatar — is not ready to give up.

“I still think I have a little left in me and just trying to get back on track to see where I am and use this year to decide whether I will continue or call it quits,” she told the Sunday Observer.

Dogged by injuries, including a separated shoulder in 2011, the former Rusea’s High and St Jago athlete has been plagued by injuries to her hamstring and quadriceps, the latter while preparing for the 2012 National Trials.

That year she also left her long-time college coach in Auburn Henry Rolle and went to Lubbock, Texas to train with another coach.

The hamstring injury still lingers, she said. “Things have not been a bed of roses, and I am trying to make a comeback this year and see how well I can get back to my best jumping form,” Jarrett noted.

Jarrett, whose personal best 6.75m came under dramatic circumstances at the JAAA National Trials in 2009 to qualify her for the Berlin World Championships, is unsure whether she really wants to pull the plug.

“My main goal this year is the Commonwealth Games, but it is a week by week thing,” she said.

Jarrett said she jumped a wind-aided 6.36m in Lubbock, Texas two weeks ago and has another meet in Texas this weekend before she goes to the Cayman Invitational later in the month.
