It is appalling and the Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington should offer a public apology on behalf of his disturbingly misguided senior charge, Robblin Wedderburn, who holds the rank of deputy superintendent.

A competent court of law ruled that James Forbes, widely considered a rare exemplar of the good of the JCF, is guilty of corruption charges and this Wedderburn is quoted spewing his droppings in a most unprincipled manner.

According to a media report (also carried on local TV) on Saturday, 10th May, Wedderburn said: “Forbes is still a good man, and his integrity will still stand. Mr Forbes was the image of the force and still will be the image of the force.”

Is there any wonder our country is becoming ever more lawless every day? This is a senior policeman whose statements have the potential to bring the judiciary in disrepute.

Because how could a ‘true’ court find Forbes guilty? I must say, I grew up respecting Forbes for the decency and humility with which he has carried out his work.

He has erred, however, and the law of the land has pronounced on his fate. He has the right of appeal, and until the time it’s heard and decided in the higher court, Forbes is guilty of corruption.

And with that said and done, is this senior policeman telling the country, and especially the youth, that Forbes, guilty of corruption, will remain the face of Jamaica’s police force? Does he speak for the High Command? It is outrageous and he must retract or be sent packing.
