Somerton, Anchovy to meet in Under-13 football final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — First-time finalists Somerton Primary and former winners Anchovy Primary created upsets in Friday’s semi-finals to qualify for tomorrow’s final of the St James Football Association VMBS Under-13 tournament.
Somerton beat former winners Barracks Road Primary 1-0 and Anchovy edged favourites Chetwood Memorial Primary by the same margin at the UDC Field on Friday to set up the first ever final that will see schools from the Montego Bay area taking part.
Anchovy Primary extended their lucky run after only qualifying for the semi-finals by winning a coin toss on Wednesday.
Anchovy, who had not scored a goal in their previous two games, got the winner in the 21st minute from Gareth McClaughlin as they stayed on track for their second title and first since 1999 when they became the first ‘rural’ team to win the title.
Somerton Primary, who topped their quarter-final group after a massive upset over the free-scoring Corinaldi Avenue, created yet another upset when they turned back Barracks Road.
Demarcus Walker scored after dribbling all the way from his own area and kicking past Barracks Road’s goalkeeper Javarne Bennett.
At the other end, Somerton’s goalkeeper Oniel Knott made two good saves to keep his team in the lead as Barracks Road stormed back in search of at least an equaliser.
Barracks Road and Chetwood will meet in the third-place play-off tomorrow, a curtain-raiser to the final.
