Demolition Job!

SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic — Jamaica’s senior Reggae Girlz made a grand-slam re-entry to football yesterday, demolishing St Lucia 14-0 in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) qualifier here at the Estadio Panamericano.

The Jamaicans scored five goals in the first half and followed with another nine in the second half to eliminate the St Lucians, who were drubbed 7-0 by the hosts Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

Shakira Duncan scored four times, striking the net in the 37th, 56th, 58th and the 63rd minutes.

Substitute Alexa Allen nabbed a treble, calmly finishing in minutes 69th, 77th and 88th.

Omolyn Davis (second minute), Sashana Campbell (28th), Reggae Girl debutant Donna-Kay Henry (45th), Kenesha Reid (81st), Amy Loughran (90th) and Sherona Forrester (90th) scored one apiece.

As if the Jamaicans needed any help, an own goal was also conceded by St Lucia captain Ellaisa Marquis in first half injury time.

Jamaica’s head coach Merron Gordon was pleased with the manner of victory, particularly since the senior programme was dormant for several years.

He is buoyed ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Dominican Republic, where a draw would seal top spot for his outfit in Group Five.

“I’m happy for the girls because it was nerve-racking for some of them at first because they haven’t played at this level since 2008. They eventually got it right and we scored more goals in the second half.

“These girls are very talented so once they come out and execute I don’t think any team in the Caribbean should beat them. It took about 30 minutes to really start playing against St Lucia so against Dom Rep they need to start earlier,” Gordon told the Jamaica Observer.

Nigel Francis, the coach of St Lucia, conceded his players were out-matched after not managing a single shot, either on or off target. He added that internal problems blighted their preparation.

“The Jamaicans were better. The girls tried, but we had issues internally and it showed in the result here,” Francis said.

Davis headed the Jamaicans in front in the second minute, but despite having the bulk of the possession, they failed to extend the lead until Campbell tapped in the second after St Lucia goalkeeper Turna Thomas spilled a cross in the 28th.

As the Jamaicans became more patient in their build-ups, they began to flood the St Lucia net.

Duncan held off a defender’s challenge before thumping a shot past the goalkeeper from point-blank range in the 37th.

Henry, playing her first game for Jamaica at any level, got onto the scoresheet with a simple tap-in in injury time, while Marquis turned into her own net to round off the first half scoring.

Duncan turned in another in the 56th minute after a near-post corner from the impressive midfielder Jodi-Ann McGregor.

Allen, who had just entered the fray, exhibited strength and composure before crossing for Duncan to score her third goal in the 58th.

Duncan completed her evening of scoring when she dribbled past a defender and the substitute keeper Elver Descartes before slamming home her fourth and the team’s eighth in the 63rd.

Allen and fellow substitute Kenesha Reid combined for the team’s ninth. The hard-running Reid slipped a pass for Allen to side-foot home with accomplished ease in the 69th.

Allen struck again eight minutes later, drilling home with aplomb.

Reid scored the 11th for Jamaica when put through on goal by Duncan’s sweetly-weighted pass in the 81st minute.

The confident Allen completed her treble in the 88th with another one-time finish.

Another substitute, Amy Loughran, also got on the score sheet, while central defender Sherona Forrester raced forward to sneak home the 14th and final goal against the beleaguered St Lucians.

Only the top team in the group will automatically advance to the CFU Women’s Cup Finals in Trinidad & Tobago in August.
