Argentina defeat Switzerland 1-0 in extra time
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Argentina scored with less than two minutes left in extra time to go one up and take the match against Switzerland in their round of 16 game on Tuesday.
After defending doggedly throughout the second half a Switzerland mistake at the half-line gave Argentina the break in the 118th minute.
Switzerland lost the ball and Messi dribbling into space, passed to Angel Di Maria who finished with heartbreaking accuracy.
However the Europeans bounced back and only the upright stopped the game from going to penalties after Sergio Romero in the Argentina goal was completely beaten.
The Swiss, who could be given the edge in the first half, missed two regrettable chances to go ahead.
The first was a clear shot blocked by goal keeper Romero from a corner.
But the best chance of the half saw Josip Drmic, with a wide open goal, calmly chipping a through ball into the hands of Romero.
Argentina will now play the winner of the Belgium-US match.
