A day after winning her fifth-straight IAAF Diamond League 400m hurdles race, Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer was at it again yesterday, winning the event at the Madrid IAAF World Challenge Meeting.

Spencer was never pushed and strolled to a comfortable 55.08 seconds, her slowest time since placing second in the opening Diamond League race in Doha, Qatar in early May.

Stephenie-Ann McPherson was also a winner in Spain yesterday, taking the women’s 400m, while former MVP sprinter Asafa Powell was second in a men’s 100m in Blegium, running 10.15 seconds (0.4m/s), an improvement on the 10.30 seconds he ran four days ago in Luzern, Switzerland.

Yesterday, he finished second behind American Marvin Bracey, 10.13 seconds, while Trinidad’s Keston Bledman was third in 10.22 seconds.

Powell, who had not raced in nearly a year since he tested positive for a banned stimulant at the Jamaican National Senior Championships in June last year, looked much improved yesterday after struggling in the second half of the race on Tuesday.

Spencer, who has been unbeaten in the event since May and is the gold medal favourite going into the Commonwealth Games that starts next week in Scotland, had won on Friday in another slow time, running 54.09 seconds in Monaco, just enough to win.

Anna Titimets of the Ukraine was second in 55.49 seconds, while American Tiffany Williams was third in 55.81 seconds, while Jamaica’s Nickesha Wilson was fourth in 56.34 seconds and Janieve Russell seventh in 58.58 seconds.

McPherson, the World Champs finalist — showed signs she is getting back to her best, beating Spain’s Indira Terrero (51.65 seconds) and compatriot Christine Day (51.72), while another Jamaican Shericka Williams was fifth in 51.77 seconds.

Edino Steel was sixth in the men’s race in 46.03 seconds.

Kerron Stewart, who is still seeking her first Commonwealth Games medal, was second in the women’s 100m in a wind- aided 11.08 seconds (2.6m/s), the same time as the winner, American Barbra Pierre, as both women hit the finish line together.

O’Dayne Richards was second in the men’s shot put with 20.33m beaten by American Ryan Whiting’s 20.91m, while long jumper Damar Forbes could only muster a wind-aided 7.58m (3.9m/s) and finished in 10th place.
