Windwards derail Guyana train
Centuries from Johnnel Eugene and Dane Edwards piloted Windward Islands to a 66-run win over Guyana in the penultimate round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-15 tournament at UWI Mona Campus yesterday.
Edwards struck 116, while Eugene was left unbeaten on 104, before returning to bag two wickets for 36 runs in handing Guyana their first loss of the five-round tournament.
Scores: Windward Islands 279-6 (50 overs); Guyana 213-8 (50 overs).
After winning the toss and taking first strike in sunny conditions, the Windwards lost their first wicket with 21 runs on the board, but Edwards was dominant in an 82-run second-wicket stand with Obadele Joseph (11) in laying the platform.
Edwards was also the aggressor in a 92-run third-wicket combination with Eugene, striking nine fours and three sixes from 110 deliveries, while Eugene cracked 11 fours and one six in his 106-ball knock.
Collin Barlow, two for 33, and Kevin Sinclair, two for 33, led the Guyanese bowling attack.
Captain Bashkar Yadram with a 68-ball half-century and Joshua Persaud (46) got the Guyanese run chase off to a solid start as they piled up 103 for the first wicket.
However, they lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter, which left them struggling at the back-end of the innings. Simeon Gerson and Johan Jeremiah also bagged two wickets each.
Coach Alton Crafton told the Jamaica Observer that he was happy with the win, while also expressing disappointment about their prior 16-run loss to Barbados.
He added that the dry conditions has been causing some problems for his charges in the field.
Meanwhile, Guyanese coach Julian Moore expressed disappointment about losing ace spinner Sagar Hatairmani, who had to return home due to the untimely death of his mother.
“That was a setback for us, but not taking anything away from the Windwards. I thought they played good cricket…I thought they batted well, but this is just a setback for us and we will get it right,” he explained.
The Windwards team had earlier fell victim to a robbery as their passports and other valuables went missing.
However, the bag containing the documents was later found in a toilet in the changing room, but an undetermined sum of cash and a Apple I-pad were said to be missing. The matter has been reported to the police.
Guyana continue to lead the standings with the final round of matches scheduled to take place tomorrow.
