KINGSTON, Jamaica – Agents from the new Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) on Monday, August 4 charged a 34-year-old police constable for extortion.

According to reports from MOCA, the constable identified as Gregory Dixon had already been on suspension since 2012 for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, when he committed another offence on August 3, 2013.

MOCA  says that a young man, while leaving a remittance agency in Montego Bay, St James, fell prey to Dixon who allegedly attempted to solicit a sum of $15,000 from him. When the victim refused, he was threatened with an arrest. Dixon allegedly made another attempt at getting cash to which the man conceded and reportedly handed over $10, 000.  

The incident was reported to the then Anti-Corruption Branch which carried out investigations, and submitted a file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Following a ruling by the DPP, Dixon was arrested and charged for extortion.

He appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate Court Tuesday, were he was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 with surety and was ordered to report to the Barnett Street Police Station three times per week.

Dixon is set to reappear in court on Wednesday August 27.
