Kay Sue upsets rivals in feature
Apprentice rider Shamare Muir was the toast at Caymanas Park by riding a double, including Kay Sue in the annual renewal of the Henry George Harrison Snr Memorial Cup yesterday.
Trained by Gresford Smith and owned by KRK, Kay Sue (Burning Marque- Psyche) obliged as a 11-1 betting chance in a field of 13 runners going over 1,300 metres.
Kay Sue broke well and was held in fifth position by her rider behind leaders Just Like Emma (Andre Martin), Justice Rhoodal (Kuri Powell up) and Cran Corazon (Orayne Sewell) passing the 1,200-metre mark. As the runners sorted themselves out, Justice Rhoodal picked up the lead from Just Like Emma with Kay Sue moving down into third position approaching the final bend.
Turning for home in second position, after Justice Rhoodal looked like the winner at the furlong pole, Muir then produced his mount on the outside and the four-year-old filly just got up in time to beat Oh My Grand Pa (Richard Mitchell) by three-quarters length with Justice Rhoodal a head away in third.
The winning time was 1:23:2 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Andrew McDonald-owned and trained Grande Marque won first leg of the Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) Exercise Riders’ Race going over 800 metres.
Ridden by Odeen Edward, Grande Marque, after a short duel with Oakrun (Kemoy Parchment) for the first 200 metres, pulled away for a comfortable three-and-a-half-length victory.
Oakrun was second and Te-Amo (Andre Powell) third in a time of 0:48:1 seconds from the distance raced.
The second leg of the CTL Exercise Riders’ Race went to I’m A Believer. Trained by Paul Hylton, owned by Connecticut and ridden by Kemoy Parchment, I’m A Believer (He’stherealthing-Seek) passed the winning post one-and-a-half lengths in front of Willinston (Oneil Ellis) and Spectacular Cat (R O’Connor) in a time of 0:48:0 minutes.
