Jamaica make good start in individual events at CAREBACO Champs

After winning gold in both the senior and junior events over the weekend, hosts Jamaica made a good start in the individual events at the 2014 staging of Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) Championships at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium at the University of Technology (UTech) Papine Campus yesterday.

A total of 13 Jamaicans have advanced to the next round in the individual age-group events form Under-11 to Under-17.

Jamaica’s Marlon Hines defeated T&T’s Alkalif Blake 21-16, 14-21, 21-22; Zane Reid won 21-11 and 21-11 over Kennie King from Barbados and Adam Taylor whipped Barbados’ Dominick Scantlebury 21-18 and 21-12 to advance.

Shawn Clarke lost 8-21 and 8-21 to T&T’s Vance Juteram, Tristan Martin was crushed 5-21 and 1-21 by T&T’s Stephan Butcher and Kyle Sarju was defeated by Barbados’ Nicolas Howard 7-21 and 3-21 in the Under-13 boys’ singles.

In the Under-15 boys’ singles, Jamaica’s Malik Brown got the better of Barbados’ John Cupples 16-21, 21-15 and 21-19; Rhys Reid had a 21-19 and 21-12 victory over Michael Constantine 21-19 and 21-12; Joel Angus beat Kodie King of Barbados 17-21, 21-11 and 21-13; and Dane Sinclair whipped T&T’s Zane Juma 21-12 and 21-3 to advance.

Jamaica’s only loss in this age group came when Mark Anthony Salmon went down 21-3 and 21-8 to T&T’s Ihsaan Furlonge. In the girls’ equivalent, Jamaica’s Rashmi Ragbear was no match for T&T’s Ananada Ramsingh as she lost 21-6, 21-6.

Meanwhile, in the Under-17 boys’ singles, Jamaica’s Shane Wilson, one of the tournament’s favourites, had an easy 21-11 and 21-3 win over T&T’s Jerome Charles; Mathew Lee stopped Guyana’s Jonathon Mangia 21-19 and 21-15; Isaac Roberts comfortably beat Barbados’ Keshem Moore 21-12 and 21-16; Dejon Wright defeated Renaldo Sinanan of T&T 21-18, 17-21 and 21-16; and Justin Taylor outplayed T&T’s Joshua Smith 13-21, 21-15 and 21-17 to advance.

Oshane Newland went down 21-13 and 21-9 to Barbados’ Shae Marlin; Alante Daley also went down 21-10 and 21-9 to Barbados’ Jehu Gaskin and Shamar Hunter was beaten by Guyana’s Narayan Ramdhani.

In the Under-17 girls’ singles play, Christina Hastings defeated Guyana’s Ambika Ramraj 21-13 and 21-14, while her teammates Anna Morison lost 8-21 and 2-21 to T&T’s Brittney Mohammed, and Esther Reynolds surprisingly went down 13-21 and 15-21 to Ralits Wong of T&T.

Under-13 boys’ singles

Zane Reid (JAM) vs Marlon Hines (JAM), Romaine Cole vs Vance Juteram (T&T) and Adam Taylor (JAM) vs Stephon Butcher (T&T)

Under-15 boys’ singles

Malik Brown (JAM) vs Brandon Khillawan (T&T), Rhys Reid (JAM) vs Nicholas Sobers (BAR) and Joel Angus (JAM) vs Dane Sinclair (JAM).
