MINISTER without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr Morais Guy, is again appealing to road users to be vigilant and to obey road traffic signs.

“We are urging motorists to obey the speed limit, and to be extra cautious, particularly where they see pedestrians,” Guy said.

The minister’s call comes as the Road Safety Unit in the ministry is reporting that road fatalities involving the elderly have increased by six per cent since the start of the year, when compared with the similar period last year.

A total of 33 senior citizens have died as a result of road crashes to date, 25 of whom were females and eight males.

As of August 7, there have been 189 fatalities, arising from 176 crashes on the island’s roadways.

The minister noted that road crashes continue to be a major strain on the public purse.

“When one considers that the total number of crashes each year causes the Ministry of Health approximately $5 billion, one recognises the huge strain it has on the budget of the Government. And, that if one factors that the $5 billion could be spent in other areas of the economy, then we see the reason why they should (be more vigilant on the roads),” Guy said.

He informed that the ministry will continue to educate the public on proper road usage and general road safety.
