PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Trinidad and Tobago’s senior women’s side are appealing for aid as they ready themselves to compete in their final round qualifier for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

T&T beat Jamaica in the final of the inaugural Women’s Caribbean Cup here Tuesday night, to qualify for the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, which runs from October 15-26.

The top three teams from the CONCACAF tournament qualify for the Women’s World Cup, while the fourth-placed team heads into a play-off with the third-placed side from the South American Women’s Championship.

However, T&T captain Maylee Attin-Johnson said this week the team needed critical support in order to aid their qualification process.

“Sometimes it’s not even financial (help that is needed). It’s Nestle [for example] giving us some protein drinks after training sessions. Water, Gatorade, those things,” the Trinidad Express quoted Attin-Johnson as saying.

“They have to be blind to not see that we are moving to qualify. I hope they help us. I hope they hear us now. With or without the support, we are going to qualify.”

Though T&T will be facing increased competition, their American head coach Randy Waldrum believes reaching the World Cup is a real possibility.

“Eight teams and three-and-a-half (qualifying) spots. I think this is the best opportunity in the next 10 years to qualify,” Waldrum pointed out.

“I can’t think of a more deserving group than this group. They are talented, passionate and committed. Many of them spent 10, 12 years of their lives to have this one dream come through and I want to be a small part of it.”
