Gatlin edges Powell in World Challenge 100m face-off; McPherson, Russell win
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaicans Carrie Russell and Stephenie-Ann McPherson were winners at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Rieti, Italy Sunday while former World Record holder Asafa Powell continued his return to form in the men’s 100m.
Powell was second on time winning his heat in 9.90 seconds while American Justin Gatlin won the second heat in 9.83 seconds.
Commonwealth Games champion McPherson and Christine Day made it a Jamaican 1-2 in the women’s 400m; McPherson winning in 50.38 seconds with Day second in 51.08 seconds ahead of Ukraine’s Olha Zemlyak (51.26).
Meanwhile Russell ran a season’s best 11.10 seconds over the 100 metre ahead of American Jessica Young in a life time best 11.13 seconds and Bulgaria’s Ivet Lalova third in 11.29 seconds.
