Gutzmore, Martin win inaugural KSFJ 5K
ANDREW Gutzmore and Arieta Martin won the inaugural Kidney Support Foundation of Jamaica 5K Health Run/Walk on Sunday at the Police Officers’ Club in Kingston.
On the men’s side Gutzmore in a time of 18.38 minutes led Gavin Francis in 19.07 minutes, and Frans McKnight in 23.24 minutes, to be crowned the champion.
Martin (23.07) came in ahead of Chantol Woodard (24.13) and Massia Bayley in a time of 30.56 minutes to take third place. Martin said that she was recovering from the chikungunya virus and she was so happy to win under the circumstances.
The oldest finisher was
80-year-old Professor Lawson Douglas. Douglas performed the first kidney transplant in Jamaica and the Caribbean in 1971 at the Kingston Public Hospital.
The youngest finisher was Justin Johnson at just six years old.
The organisers, led by Commander John McFarlane, were pleased with the first staging of the 5K and said that they would begin planning for next year in order to execute an even better event.
