Round 2 heats up
ROUND Two of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup continued last week Tuesday as familiar opponents Hydel High and St Jago High battled to a 1-1 draw.
Kurt Thomas had headed Hydel into the lead in the 24th minute, but St Jago drew level courtesy of an 82nd-minute penalty from Shaqan Brown. Camperdown are now atop the group after beating Kingston College 2-0 in Monday’s other game. Rameish McKnight curled in a free kick on the 15th-minute mark before C’down doubled the lead just five minutes later from an Andre McCathy strike.
Excelsior College are still on top of the group after a 0-0 draw with titleholders Jamaica College. Excelsior lead as a result of scoring more goals. Holy Trinity still have a chance of progressing out of Group J after beating Denham Town 2-0. Jevon Fuller opened with a lovely finish in the 26th minute, while substitute Andre Leslie also scored from the spot with a 76th-minute penalty.
Wolmer’s Boys and St George’s College both had impressive wins to ensure that the last group game between the two will determine the winner. Wolmer’s beat Haile Selassie High 4-0 to ensure they would be in control of Group H. Goals from Joshua McNaught in the 8th minute and Jaheel Hyde in the 42nd wrapped up the game at half-time while Rajay Smith and Khori Bennett sealed the game in the 49th and 69th minutes respectively.
St George’s followed suit with a 5-1 drubbing of Calabar. It was C’bar who actually opened the scoring through Kevane Thompson in the sixth minute. From there on it was all StGC. Gregory Messam Jr’s free kick put StGC ahead in the 37th before Brown found the back of the net again to make it 3-1 at half-time. Stewart also got his brace in the 50th minute before Calabar put the ball into their own net again after pressure from Messam.
Innswood defeated Vauxhall 3-1 to find themselves atop Group I. Jamel Stewart of Vauxhall got on the scoresheet first in the 23rd minute, but Innswood clawed back in the 32nd minute from Dale Hinds. Shawn Beckford gave them the lead in the 74th minute before Akeem Gibbons finished off Vauxhall in the 90th to make it 3-1.
