Hillel, Montego Bay capture tennis titles
HILLEL Academy and Montego Bay High captured the 2014 Mayberry Investments Limited High Schools Team Tennis Championships Under-19 boys and girls finals, respectively, at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Sunday.
The Hillel Under-19 boys, coached jointly by Ryan Russell and Wayne Cox, had to work hard to get the better of the David Sanquinetti-coached Wolmer’s Boys with a hard-fought victory 4-3 after the scores were locked 3-3 coming into the final doubles match which they won to clinch the title.
Coach Sanguinetti said Wolmer’s suffered from a bout of nervousness.
“Our final doubles pair was a bit nervous and could not stand up to the challenge and we lost the match. It was a very good and keenly fought battle between both teams,” he said.
Meancoached Carlos Phillpotts and Dwayne Pagon were overpowered by the brilliant performance of Montego Bay High in the Under-19 girls final.
The defending champion Immaculate Conception went down to a convincing 4-1 defeat to St James-based outfit who were winning the Under-19 girls title for the first time.
It was also the end of Immaculate Conception’s seven-year reign as Under-19 girls champions. Montego Bay High was involved in a ding-dong battle similar as to last year when t hey met in the final.
In the Under-15 boys final, Hillel came out winners 3-2, while Campion College stopped Immaculate Conception 3-0 in the Under-15 girls final.
Meanwhile, Saede Nickle of Montego Bay High was named the Most Valuable Female Player in the Under-19 category, while Kyle Martin of Wolmer’s was honoured for the Under-19 boys equivalent.
Nicholas Gore was voted Most Valuable Player in the Under-19 boys category, while Selena Blythe of Campion was named the Most Valuable Player in the girls’ Under-15 section.
